SSSA is a federation of affiliates, each covering its own social science discipline and interdisciplinary connections.
SSSA is governed by an Executive Committee, made up of elective offices, and the SSSA Council, which includes the Executive Committee and representatives of each affiliate.
The presidency of SSSA rotates between the largest affiliates and an open year. A person is nominated to become SSSA President, and makes a five-year commitment; in the first year that person is the SSSA Vice President and chairs the program committee for interdisciplinary and thematic panels; in the second year that person serves as SSSA President-Elect; in the third year, the person serves as SSSA President; in the fourth and fifth years, the person continues to sit on the Executive Council as a Past President.
